how to be courageous

Anyone feeling the weight of the world's problems on their shoulders lately?  Because I sure have!  My heart is still aching from the terrorist attack in Nice, shootings in the South, and so so much more.

A while back I got together with my friends Roxana and Brooke and their daughters to do a fun little photo shoot for this darling bow company called Free Babes and the cutest handmade shop called Sweet Hannah B.  Emi and I had so much fun being a part of this.  But as I watched all of our daughters play in this beautiful orchard that was the location for the photoshoot, part of my heart began to ache as I thought about the world these girls would grow up in.   There are so many days when I find myself wondering what our world is coming to and how much worse it could possibly be when my own littles are all grown up.

Often times, I get a huge pit in my stomach thinking about this and sometimes even get super sad about all the darkness that surrounds us.  But the other day, I was talking to my friend Aleigh about this very topic, she said..."Sure, there is a lot of bad.  But there is also still a lot of good!"  Talk about a hand to forehead moment!  My dear friend was so right and I was so surprised that I hadn't even remembered that myself.

In life, we have two choices...dwell on the bad or focus on the good.  Recently I have been dwelling on the bad and it has been so mentally and spiritually draining for me.  So even though a part of my thoughts will always go out to the sadness and losses so many are experiencing at the hands of horrible people, I'm going to focus more on the good that many still continue to do and work every day at being strong and courageous in times of trouble.  Making sure to teach my littles to do the very same thing!

With the world turning out to be what it is, I think it is super important to teach our children to be as strong and courageous as they can possibly be.  Because things may only get worse from here and we need a future generation that is willing to stand for what is right...no matter what the cost.  And I firmly believe that this principle starts within the home.

Recently, I came across this quote by Nelson Mandela and it has quickly become one of my favorite quotes about courage...

quotes about courage

Every day, my littles face scary things.  And as their mom, I want nothing more than to make all of those scary things go away.  But deep down, I know that if I did that, my littles wouldn't know how to cope on their own when they came across anything that scared them as an adult.  So, I am currently working really hard at teaching my littles (especially Isaac-out of all of my littles...he 's the most nervous and worry-some and I love him for his tender heart.  But I definitely worry about him conquering difficult situations that he can't avoid) how to muster up all the strength and courage they have within themselves and triumph over all the trials that come their way.  Just like Nelson Mandela's quote about courage states.

Though we only have one definition of courage in the dictionary, I believe the definition of courage can be expressed in so many different ways.  For me, I sometimes show courage by speaking up when I see something bad happening.  Other times, I show courage by quieting the rage I feel inside toward people who do horrible things and turn my heart over to God so he can help me see the greater good that always follows when something bad occurs.

Even though there will always be something to fear in this world, there will also be countless things to be joyous about.  And from here on out, I am going to work harder at focusing on the good because at the end of the day, it will always outweigh the bad.

P.S. Photos are by Roxana B. Photography and the Bows are from Free Babes.  My necklaces are from Harmony and Made by Mary and I got my dress for a steal at Beehive Bazaar
