We are in t-minus 3 days until school begins people!  And I can't believe that Gus is in kindergarten and Birdie is in preschool (insert OMG emoji here)  seriously though!  As much as I want to stick my head in the sand and leave it there until time rewinds to when these two kiddos were babies, I know that's impossible.  AND despite my disbelief, I am also excited because, I know how much fun school and especially kindergarten can be!  And now that we are officially to this point in our lives, I decided to turn it into a celebration and begin and annual "back to school dinner".  Something I have been wanting to do ever since i first saw Stephanie Nielson do it with her children.

As it is with all things, I originally wanted to do something super elaborate; but quickly remembered the crowd I was catering to.  So I shelved my recipes for quinoa salad, crusted pan seared salmon, and roast asparagus for another back to school dinner we will have some other year and opted to stick with what my kids love most...

pasta with homemade alfredo sauce
peas
fresh utah peaches
homemade garlic bread
and
sparkling grape juice.

Now, I wish I could say everything went without a hitch.  But, as it always is with young kids there were a few hurdles we had to maneuver around; like Gus spilling his entire glass of sparkling grape juice all over himself and the table, Birdie drenching her dinner with her glass of water, and Bug constantly jabbing the other children with his fork to distract them long enough that he could eat something off of their plates.  And that's just the dinner portion of the evening!

Since Dave and I also loved the idea of making this annual event a special time that we can get the children excited about school and also teach them purposeful lessons they can keep in their hearts and minds throughout the entire school year; we decided to incorporate a fun and spiritually focused program into this event as well.  Deciding that, this year we wanted our children's focus to be on choosing the right and being happy,  topics we picked and thought Gus and Birdie would love because it's from one of their favorite primary songs "Choose the Right" by Joseph L. Townsend;  and though I'm sure their inner hearts and little spirits were totally obsessed with our theme, their screaming, hitting, kicking, and endlessly moving bodies told a completely different story!  At least I can say Dave and I tried!  ha!

After the program, dessert was the only thing left to do.  And that went without a hitch.  Obviously!

Despite the craziness that encircled our newest tradition, Dave and I still had a wonderful time getting caught up with my children in the back to school excitement and becoming more unified with our little family.
