Homemade Literacy Aids

Chalkboards are all the rage right now; and I'm sure you've noticed.  Due to this craze, chalkboards are no longer your run of the mill rectangular wall mounted/hand held boards.  Now-a-days, thanks to the creation of chalkboard paint, anything can become a chalkboard; and I mean anything.

Although I am on an undisclosed leave of absence from my teaching career, I still have all of my teaching supplies in my home and use them on a regular basis.  One of these such supplies is my literacy box; a plastic storage container that is full of useful reading and writing crap.  However, the one thing this box doesn't have, is a set of writing boards in which my chickies can practice writing on.

Since my box is practically full to the top, I knew I would need to come up with something that was small enough to be easily stored, but big enough to write on.  After some thinking, I realized that I had a hoard of container lids that I was saving for some future project.  Luckily for me, I finally had my future project!  So, I grabbed my favorite bottle of Martha Stewart Multi-Surface Chalkboard Acrylic Craft Paint, coated a few lids, and now use them with my chickies to practice writing letters and numbers on.

I know this whole thing seems pretty basic, but my kids love them!  And, due to their size, you can easily take them on the go and pull them out to your aid whenever your kids  need something to keep their hands and minds busy.

Loves and Hugs,
