What's in Our Diaper Bags

A friend of mine is expecting her first little one! I love all my children equally, but experiencing pregnancy for the first time is a special kind of exhilaration. I am so excited for her. My friend was asking me the other day what I keep in my diaper bag. So I thought I would share here for any other first timers out there. Since different products work for different people here are some of our recommendations.

This is what is currently in my diaper bag right now. My children are ages 6, 4, 2, and a 4 month old so my bag is pretty packed. But these items are the most important to me and have earned a space in my bag permanently.
  1. Baby Orajel Teething Swabs We like to put this on our babies gums before giving them Tylenol when teething. We figure this will numb the pain until the Tylenol kicks in. The swabs make it super easy to apply.
  2. Desitin Maximum Strength Original Diaper Rash Ointment This has worked the best for me.
  3. Travel Bib This is a must for my diaper bag as it folds up really small but I can whip it out when my child is drooling or later in the eating stages.
  4. Finger Puppets: These are perfect for any age and keep the kiddos quiet. They are also great for kids to teeth on as they are squishy, just make sure they don't swallow them. They are also available at Oriental Trading.
  5. JJ Cole Pacifier Pod in Stone Arbor I really value my pod as it serves as a sanitary place to keep a backup binky. And one thing I've learned by having kids is always have backups.
  6. O'Ball Rattle This is my baby girls favorite toy right now. It's light enough for her to hold and holes are perfect for little fingers.
  7. PocketBac Hand Sanitizer: Lifesaver after my child picked up trash or we've been out and about.
  8. Grocery Bag: I just use ones from the store. Recycle right? Free and perfect for soiled clothing or super dirty diapers.
I have three kids ages 3 and under, so my diaper bag is full of crap.  All of it, of course, has it's necessary purpose; but, if I listed everything that was in there, the list would never end.  So, below are my top 6 must haves that I think every diaper bag should continually stay stocked up on.
  1. Reusable water bottle:  I love having a reusable water bottle in my diaper bag because there have been some instances when I have found myself at a place that doesn't have an easily accessible drinking fountain.  Instead of having to tell my child they have to wait for a drink,  I just pull out my water bottle and let them take a swig from that.
  2. Burt's Bees Chap Stick:  I love this stuff!  My kids get cracked and dry lips very frequently during the fall and winter seasons.  So, if i'm ever on the go and notice that their lips are chapped, I quickly pull this stuff out and spread it on and instantly, my kids lips aren't bothering them anymore.
  3. Diaper Bag Dispenser Bags:  These are a must have for every diaper bag.  There have been many times when I have been gone and my kids have had a poopy diaper.  Of course, this always happened when there wasn't a diaper friendly garbage can or, there wasn't even a garbage can at all.  So, to solve both of those problems, I've just pulled out one of my diaper dispenser bags and used it to instantly eliminated the odor for the garbage can, or hold my diaper for me in my diaper bag and keep it  smelling fresh until I could dispose of it.
  4. Sunblock Stick:  If I ever know that my chickies are going to be out in the sun for a while, I always make sure that I have sunscreen with me.  However, I hate how messy regular sunscreen is; so, to help out with this, I purchase sunblock sticks that not only are 100% mess free , but also take up so much less room than a bottle.
  5. Bourdeaux's Butt Paste:  I have never been a fan of Desitin for the following: 1)  If you get it on something, it is next to impossible to get out.  2) Doesn't do much for a diaper rash.  I love Bourdeaux's Butt Paste because it is extremely easy to get out of anything it gets on, and does wonders for a diaper rash.
  6. Boogie Wipes:  My kids always get runny noses.  So I always make sure to have these in my diaper bag because they aren't as harsh as a tissue is.
