Meet Melanie Burk.

Aside from being a killer designer, teacher, business owner, and former Utah Provonian, Melanie is first and foremost, a mother who oozes a love for life and her two (soon to be three!) sweet daughters.  So, you can only imagine how very very sad we were when she moved to Las Vegas (hopefully those peeps down there know what a gem they have!)  Luckily for us though, the internet has eliminated the miles between her nest and ours and Melanie was able to take some time away from her own busy holiday schedule to give you a glimpse into her beautiful life as a Mum.

And, with that, we give you December's Inspiring Mum...

Name: Melanie Burk

Where do you live: Las Vegas

Do you have kids: Yes! I have 2 adorable girls, and another little lady on the way (in just a few weeks!) Both girls are super precocious and fun, and they keep me really busy!
What are your hobbies/passions/things you absolutely love?
I absolutely love being outside, and my husband and I both love hiking, surfing, paddle boarding, biking, and camping. We also love to travel. And of course, I really love my job–I love being a designer and I love being able to create.

One of my biggest passions however, is doing activities with my children. Earlier this year I started a project with my daughter Maggie called unexpected type. It has been a great way to spend time together and bond. Everyday we make a word out of things you wouldn't expect; like food ingredients, or rice, or building blocks. It has been a great way for us to practice words, but at the same time, learn and play with something tactile, and make something beautiful out of something you wouldn't expect(and it also passes my love of typography on to her!). I do these series on my instagram.

Your Story/how it has molded you into the mother/wife you are or want to become:
My husband and I got married a little bit older, and so we were really excited to have children. However, I suffer from a debilitating illness during pregnancy called hyperemesis. This has really made it difficult to be pregnant each time, as I am super ill and sick. We feel so lucky and grateful that we have been able to have these 2 (almost 3!) girls.

Being this sick has really changed my perspective on motherhood. I think most women come to this perspective naturally or in different ways; but for me, it has been my illness that has really pushed me to be a better mother. I really value and treasure my role as a mother. It is worth all sacrifices–and pushing through the good days and the bad with patience and love. It is more challenging, but also more rewarding than anything else in the world. There is a beautiful quote that I think sums up how I feel about motherhood:

"You are the trip I did not take; You are the pearls I cannot buy; You are my blue Italian lake; You are my piece of foreign sky." (Anne Campbell)

My children are my biggest source of inspiration,  my greatest joy, and my greatest blessing.
