What am I thankful for? There are so many facets of my life that I would like to express gratitude for, but as I read this article I knew the topic to write about. I am thankful for marriage.

The author shares the experience of how he had doubts about marrying his fiancĂ©. He goes to his father for advice and his father responds with the following, “You don’t marry to make yourself happy, you marry to make someone else happy… Marriage isn’t for you. It’s not about you. Marriage is about the person you married.” With this revelatory council the author goes on grow in love for his fiancĂ©.

Marriage is about the person you married. Marriage for me is humbling and tough. I know couples whose relationship is naturally harmonious. I acknowledge the fact that we all have different trials in life, and yours may not be working on your marriage. For my husband and I, there is a significant amount of effort we both must give on a daily basis to make our marriage successful. We have had to work through issues and struggles. Most days require patience and understanding.

But, I have come to realize that this is one of the most significant ways my husband shows his love for me. When I see him act different than his natural character I know it is for me. When I see him try I know he is trying because he loves me. In turn, I am driven to try to do the hard and inconvenient things for him. The author writes, “…a true marriage (and true love) is never about you. It’s about the person you love—their wants, their needs, their hopes, and their dreams. Selfishness demands, “What’s in it for me?”, while Love asks, “What can I give?” I enjoyed this article because this lesson of selflessness is key to my marriage.

I am so grateful for what my marriage teaches me. I am grateful for my trials in my marriage. I am a more patient, thoughtful, and kind version of myself because of marriage. I truly believe who you surround yourself with directly influences you and I’m thankful to be with my husband.
